French-language support is hard to staff in North America and expensive in Europe. Morocco sits in between: 13.5 million French speakers, a European time zone, and a country where French is widely used in business and higher education. Talentige has made 500+ hires in Morocco. This guide covers what French-speaking customers expect, the language rules that affect support, a working schedule, the KPIs to track and the costs compared with hiring in France, Québec or the US.

What customers expect, market by market

"French support" isn't one market. The same reply can read as polite in Paris, stiff in Montréal and oddly informal in Geneva. A good agent adjusts vocabulary, register and formats to the customer, and your macros should have local variants where it matters.

FrancePrecise and formalCustomers expect vous, a full greeting and sign-off (Bonjour Madame Martin … Cordialement) and a clear answer before any upsell. Written French is judged closely: spelling and grammar mistakes cost trust fast. Prices with VAT, in the 1 234,56 € format.
BelgiumFrench and DutchWallonia is mostly French-speaking, Flanders Dutch-speaking and Brussels officially bilingual, so route by language, not by country. Belgian French says septante and nonante for 70 and 90; agents should understand them and keep standard French in writing.
SwitzerlandRomandie, CHF, high standardsFrench-speaking customers are concentrated in the west (Geneva, Vaud, Neuchâtel, Jura, parts of Fribourg and Valais). Expect formal register, prices in CHF and, often, the 1'234.50 number format. Many customers also have German-speaking colleagues, so handovers need to be clean.
QuébecWarm, direct, in French firstCustomers often switch quickly to a friendlier tone, and some prefer tu once the conversation is going; start with vous and follow their lead. Use Québec vocabulary in templates (courriel, clavardage, fin de semaine) and remember that French service isn't optional here (see the rules below).
North and West AfricaFrench alongside other languagesIn Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Senegal and Côte d'Ivoire, many customers use French for business but also speak Arabic, Amazigh languages or Wolof. A Moroccan agent will recognise code-switching and local names, and can keep a formal French tone that works across the region.

Formal vs informal: getting the register right

Write your tone guide down before the agent starts: which register for which channel, whether you use inclusive writing, how you spell your product names, and the five phrases you never want to see. Mixing tu and vous in one thread, or translating English idioms word for word ("Je vais revenir vers vous" is fine; "Je reviens à vous" is not), is what makes support read as outsourced.

French-language rules that affect support

France: Loi Toubon (Law 94-665)

French is required in the designation, offer, presentation, instructions for use and description of the warranty for goods and services, and in invoices and receipts (Art. 2). For support, that means French versions of help-centre articles, warranty and returns information and billing documents for French consumers. Translations can sit alongside French.

Québec: Bill 96 and the Charter of the French language

Bill 96 (2022, c. 14) strengthened the Charter. Businesses that offer goods or services to consumers must respect their right to be informed and served in French (s. 50.2); catalogues and similar documents (s. 52), invoices and receipts (s. 57) and standard-form consumer contracts (s. 55) must be available in French. A French-speaking agent covers the live part of that obligation.

Belgium and Switzerland have their own language rules, mostly about regions and official communications rather than private support. In practice, answer customers in the language they wrote in. This section is a practical summary, not legal advice; check your own obligations with a lawyer in each market.

GDPR basics for a support agent

An offshore support agent works with your customers' personal data, so set it up correctly from day one. You remain the controller; Talentige recruits, and your agent works inside your systems under your instructions.

Your hire signs an NDA with their contract, and we can include your own confidentiality and acceptable-use terms. This isn't legal advice.

Hours: Europe in the morning, North America in the afternoon

Ramadan clock change. Morocco suspends UTC+1 during Ramadan and returns to UTC+0 (Decree 2-18-855), so for about a month your agent's local clock moves back one hour. Hours in your time zone don't change. We plan this with you in advance.

Channel mix: what goes where

Email and ticketsWhere written quality matters most. Start your agent here: every reply can be reviewed in week 2.
Live chatShort, friendly, fast. Give the agent saved replies in both registers.
PhoneBest for Québec and older European customers. Test accent comprehension, not just grammar.
Social and reviewsPublic, so formal by default. Agree what the agent can answer and what goes to you.

Many clients keep French and English in separate queues with separate macros, so reporting by language stays clean and you can see whether French customers wait longer.

Three ways clients use a French-English agent

Québec + USOne agent covers French Canadian and US English tickets in North American hours.
France + UKA European-hours agent for French and British customers, with no time-zone stretch.
Follow-the-sunA Morocco agent on European mornings hands over to your North American team or a Spanish-English agent in Latin America.

How we test French and English

  1. Written French. A complaint reply in the right register (vous, not tu), with no anglicisms. We read for grammar and spelling, but also for tone: does it apologise, explain and close the loop?
  2. Oral French on a recorded call, including a Québécois caller, so you can hear how the candidate handles accent and speed.
  3. Written and oral English to the same standard.
  4. A live switch. The customer starts in English and moves to French mid-call; we check the candidate keeps the facts straight across both languages.
  5. A ticket in a help desk like yours (Zendesk, Gorgias, Freshdesk, Intercom).

You receive the recordings and written samples with each of the 3–5 finalists. Morocco's overall EF EPI 2025 English score is 492 (#68), around the 488 global average, which is why we test every finalist formally rather than relying on a CV.

KPIs to track by language

First response timeSplit by French and English queues, so one language isn't quietly slower.
CSAT by languageSurvey in the customer's language; a French survey on an English template skews results.
First-contact resolutionShows whether macros and access are good enough to solve issues in one touch.
QA scoreA weekly sample graded on accuracy, tone and register. French language quality gets its own line.
Escalation rateFalling escalations show product knowledge is building.
Backlog ageOldest open French and English tickets, checked daily.

Set targets from your current team's numbers rather than an industry average, and review them at day 30, 60 and 90.

The French figure is the legal minimum, before employer social contributions; an experienced bilingual agent in Paris costs more. You pay nothing until you hire, then a one-time fixed placement fee by role, with no retainer by default (a small optional retainer applies only if you want us to manage payment and admin monthly). You choose how your hire is paid: Talentige handles payment and management for a small monthly retainer, or you pay your hire directly with our guidance on the best option for their country (Wise, Remitely, a bank transfer or another local option). You can pay in USD, CAD, EUR, AUD or GBP.

Labour-law and holidays note. Morocco's Labour Code (Law 65-99) caps the working week for employees at 44 hours (2,288 hours a year, Art. 184). Morocco's public holidays mix fixed national days, including Amazigh New Year on 14 January, with Islamic holidays that follow the lunar calendar. Talentige hires join your team as full-time contractors under a government-stamped, locally compliant contract, and follow your holiday calendar apart from one or two local holidays agreed upfront, for example Eid al-Fitr. This isn't legal advice.

French-English support in Morocco: FAQs

How much does a French-English support agent in Morocco cost?
A bilingual French-English agent typically earns about $1,600 a month through Talentige. For comparison, the French minimum wage is about $2,100 a month gross before employer contributions, the Québec median for customer service representatives about $2,900, and a US representative about $5,300 with overhead.
What time zone is Morocco in?
UTC+1 for most of the year, moving to UTC+0 during Ramadan. That's the same as Paris in winter and one hour behind it in summer.
Can a Moroccan agent support Québec customers?
Yes. We test oral French with a Québécois caller, and North American hours fall in a Moroccan afternoon and evening. Templates should use Québec vocabulary such as courriel and clavardage.
Does Bill 96 mean I need French-speaking support in Québec?
Under the Charter of the French language, as amended by Bill 96, businesses offering goods or services to consumers must respect their right to be informed and served in French (s. 50.2). A French-speaking agent helps you meet that in practice. Check your obligations with a Québec lawyer.
Does the Loi Toubon apply to customer support?
The Loi Toubon requires French in the offer, description, instructions, warranty terms, invoices and receipts for goods and services in France (Art. 2). Support content such as help articles and returns information for French consumers should therefore be in French.
Is it GDPR-compliant to have an agent in Morocco access EU customer data?
It can be. Morocco has no EU adequacy decision, so you normally rely on Standard Contractual Clauses (GDPR Art. 46), give the agent least-privilege access, and keep your role as controller. Your privacy adviser should document it.
Should my agent use tu or vous?
Vous by default, especially in France, Belgium, Switzerland and B2B. Switch to tu only if the customer does, which is more common in Québec and on live chat.
How do you test French and English?
Written French in the right register, a recorded oral call including a Québécois caller, English to the same standard, a live language switch and a ticket in a help desk like yours. You get the samples with each finalist.
Is French widely spoken in Morocco?
The OIF estimates 13.5 million French speakers in Morocco, 36% of the population. French is widely used in business and higher education.
Which holidays does my agent take?
Your holiday calendar, apart from one or two Moroccan holidays you agree upfront.
How do I pay my agent?
You choose how your hire is paid: Talentige handles payment and management for a small monthly retainer, or you pay your hire directly with our guidance on the best option for their country (Wise, Remitely, a bank transfer or another local option). You can pay in USD, CAD, EUR, AUD or GBP.
How fast can I hire?
3–5 tested finalists in about 14 days, with a 90-day replacement guarantee.
